You wake up to a cold shower. Or you notice a puddle forming under your water heater. Or your energy bills keep climbing for no clear reason.
These aren’t just inconveniences. They’re signs your water heater is struggling, and in South Patrick Shores’ coastal climate, that struggle accelerates fast. Florida’s humidity and hard water don’t do your equipment any favors. Corrosion happens quicker here. Mineral buildup clogs things up faster. And when a water heater fails in a home built in the 1940s through 1990s—which many around here are—it’s not always a straightforward fix.
That’s where experience matters. We’ve handled water heater installation, repair, and replacement in older homes and newer builds across Brevard County since 2007. We know what fails first, what lasts, and what’s worth fixing versus replacing. You get straight answers, not upsells. You get hot water restored quickly, and systems that hold up in Florida’s conditions.
Drain Wizard has been serving South Patrick Shores and the wider Brevard County area since 2007. We’re based in Cocoa, family-owned, and built on 40+ years of combined plumbing experience.
Our owner, Carl, started in this trade at 16. He’s done everything from gas piping to full bathroom remodels, and he personally oversees every job we take on. That’s not marketing talk—that’s how we operate. Carl’s also a military retiree with 20 years of service, and those values—honesty, accountability, hard work—are baked into how we run this business.
You’re not getting a call center or a rotating crew. You’re getting a local team that knows South Patrick Shores homes, understands the plumbing challenges that come with coastal living and older construction, and shows up ready to solve the problem right.
First, we listen. You tell us what’s going on—no hot water, strange noises, leaks, whatever it is. We ask a few questions to get a clear picture before we even show up.
Then we come out and assess the situation in person. We inspect your current water heater, check for corrosion, sediment buildup, leaks, and any code or safety issues. If it’s your home’s original unit from the ’70s or ’80s, we’re also looking at whether your plumbing and electrical can support a modern replacement.
From there, we give you options. If a repair makes sense and buys you a few more years, we’ll tell you. If replacement is the smarter move, we explain why and walk through your choices—traditional tank, tankless, heat pump systems. We talk through costs, efficiency, and what fits your home and budget. No pressure. No jargon. Just clear information so you can decide.
Once you’re ready to move forward, we handle the installation or repair efficiently. We pull permits if needed, dispose of old equipment properly, and make sure everything is up to code. You get hot water back, and we don’t leave until the job’s done right.

We cover the full spectrum of water heater work. That means emergency repairs when your system fails at the worst possible time. It means replacements when your unit has reached the end of its lifespan—and in Florida’s climate, that often happens sooner than the national average. It also means new installations for remodels, additions, or upgrades to more efficient systems like tankless or heat pump water heaters.
South Patrick Shores has a mix of older and mid-century homes, and many still have original or decades-old plumbing. We’re used to working in tight spaces, dealing with outdated venting, and upgrading systems that weren’t built for today’s water heaters. We also understand how Florida’s water quality impacts performance. Hard water is common here, and that mineral content accelerates wear and tear. We factor that into our recommendations and our maintenance advice.
If you’re dealing with a leak, no hot water, inconsistent temperatures, or rising energy costs, those are all signs worth addressing sooner rather than later. Waiting usually makes the problem worse and the bill higher. We’re licensed, insured, and we’ve been doing this long enough to spot issues before they become emergencies.
Most traditional tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years under normal conditions. In South Patrick Shores, you’re often looking at the lower end of that range. Florida’s humidity accelerates corrosion on the tank itself, and our hard water causes mineral buildup inside the unit, which makes it work harder and wear out faster.
If your home was built in the ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s and still has the original water heater, you’re likely overdue for replacement. Even if it’s still producing hot water, older units are far less efficient and more prone to sudden failure. Coastal air also plays a role—salt and moisture in the environment can corrode external components and connections over time.
Regular maintenance helps, but it won’t stop the clock. Flushing the tank annually to remove sediment, checking the anode rod, and inspecting for leaks can extend lifespan by a year or two. But once a unit hits 10+ years in this climate, replacement is usually the smarter financial move.
It depends on the age of the unit, the cost of the repair, and what’s actually broken. If your water heater is under 6 years old and the issue is something like a faulty thermostat or heating element, repair usually makes sense. Those are relatively inexpensive fixes that can buy you several more years.
But if your unit is 8+ years old and you’re looking at a major repair—like a leaking tank, a failing gas valve, or compressor issues on a heat pump model—replacement is almost always the better call. You’re paying for a repair on a system that’s already near the end of its lifespan, and another failure is likely around the corner.
We also consider efficiency. Older water heaters cost more to run, especially in Florida where they’re working year-round. A new unit, particularly a high-efficiency or tankless model, can cut your energy costs significantly. We’ll walk through the math with you so you can see the real cost comparison, not just the upfront price.
Traditional tank water heaters store 40 to 80 gallons of hot water and keep it heated around the clock. They’re reliable, straightforward, and less expensive upfront. The downside is they can run out of hot water during heavy use, and they’re constantly using energy to maintain temperature even when you’re not using any water.
Tankless water heaters heat water on demand. When you turn on the hot water tap, the unit fires up and heats water as it flows through. You never run out of hot water, and you’re only using energy when you actually need it. They’re more efficient, last longer (often 15-20 years), and take up far less space. The tradeoff is higher upfront cost and the need for regular descaling maintenance, especially in areas with hard water like South Patrick Shores.
Which one makes sense depends on your household size, your hot water usage patterns, and your budget. If you’ve got a larger family or use a lot of hot water simultaneously—showers, dishwasher, laundry—you may need multiple tankless units or a larger traditional tank. We help you figure out what actually fits your situation, not just what’s trendy.
The most common reason is sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. Over time, minerals from Florida’s hard water settle and create a barrier between the heating element and the water. Your heater has to work harder and longer to get the water hot, and it can’t hold as much usable hot water because sediment is taking up space.
Another possibility is a failing heating element or thermostat. If the lower heating element burns out, only the top portion of the tank gets heated. You’ll have hot water for a few minutes, then it turns lukewarm or cold. That’s a fixable issue if the unit is relatively young, but if it’s older, it’s often a sign that other components are on their way out too.
Your household’s hot water demand might have also increased. If you’ve added people to the home, upgraded to a larger shower head, or added appliances, your current water heater might simply be undersized. A 40-gallon tank that worked fine for two people won’t keep up with four. We can calculate your actual demand and recommend the right size or type of system to match it.
For a standard 40 to 50-gallon tank water heater replacement, you’re typically looking at $1,200 to $2,500 installed, depending on the brand, capacity, and any modifications needed to bring things up to code. If your home has older plumbing or requires venting updates, that can add to the cost.
Tankless water heaters run higher upfront—usually $2,500 to $4,500 installed—because they require more complex installation, especially if you’re converting from a traditional tank system. You may need electrical upgrades, new gas lines, or venting changes. But they last longer and cost less to operate, so the payback happens over time through lower energy bills.
Heat pump water heaters fall somewhere in between, typically $2,000 to $3,500 installed. They’re highly efficient and work well in Florida’s climate, but they need adequate space and airflow. We don’t give cookie-cutter quotes because every home and situation is different. We assess your specific setup, explain what’s involved, and give you a clear price before any work starts. No surprises.
Yes. Water heater failures don’t wait for business hours, and we understand that. If your water heater is leaking, completely out, or causing a safety issue, we prioritize getting someone out to you as quickly as possible.
Emergency calls often happen early morning or late at night—that’s when people notice there’s no hot water or discover a leak. We do our best to respond the same day, and in many cases, we can get your hot water restored within hours depending on the issue. If it’s a simple fix like a tripped breaker, faulty thermostat, or pilot light issue, we can usually handle it on the spot.
If the unit needs replacement and it’s an emergency situation—like active leaking or a gas safety concern—we’ll stop the immediate problem, assess your options, and work with you to get a new system installed as fast as possible. We keep common water heater models in stock and have relationships with local suppliers, so we’re not waiting days for parts or equipment. You’re not going without hot water any longer than absolutely necessary.
