Ever hear loud banging noises when using the plumbing in your home or business? It could be ‘water hammer’. Many Brevard County and Cocoa area residents experience this.
What is Water Hammer?
Water hammer creates a loud banging noise that seems to come from your pipes when you shut off a valve (such as a faucet or showerhead). Often caused by damaged or worn out faucet washers, mineral buildup may also be a culprit, as are loose pipes.
How to Fix Water Hammer:
- First, turn off the water main
- Open all cold water faucets (beginning with those located at the highest point in your home, such as an attic, second or third floor) and working your way down to the basement
- Next, flush all the toilets in your home
- Leave faucets open for around a half hour
- Then slowly turn the water main back on, leaving faucets open for between 5-10 minutes.
- After 5-10 minutes has passed, close the faucets starting in reverse, from the basement to the top of your home.
*Toilets should automatically refill on their own.
